Wow! What an upset, Blackpool overcame hot favourites Cardiff City 3-2 in the Championship Play-Off to win promotion to the Barclays Premier League. They twice came from behind at Wembley to edge the five-goal thriller to reach the top flight for the first time since 1971. The match was rated as the most valuable in world football worth a guaranteed £90m for the winners. And what was really amazing is that Blackpool became the first side to win promotion through all four divisions via the play-offs. Back in 2001 they were in the Football League’s bottom division. Nine years later a Blackpool team that started the season as relegation favourites were to upset the form books to win promotion after starting as underdogs. This just goes to prove that the underdog can overcome all obstacles and win through with guts, determination and a belief in themselves!!!

He only realised when a fan told him the match between his side Stocksbridge Steels, near Sheffield, and Witton Albion had been called off after 30 minutes.

Richard told the Daily Star: “I didn’t have a clue. I just stood there waiting for a player to come through the mist.”
